Hunt began in youth baseball leagues, and he later started at guard on three consecutive unbeaten basketball teams at Florence Junior High. In high school, he became a stellar performer on Coffee's undefeated state championship team in 1964. He scored 106 points during the '64 season, which represented more than half of the team's points. He scored 15 touchdowns and kicked 16 extra points. He also started at defensive back, kicked off, and was the team's placekicker and returned kicks. He returned three kicks for touchdowns during the season. He also qualified for the state track meet in the lOO-yard dash, 440-yard relay, broad jump and pole vaught. He played three years on the varsity baseball team and batted .500 during the Jackets' perfect season in 1965, and was 16-0 as a pitcher over three seasons. He signed a football scholarship with Auburn and started on offense and defense on the freshman team in 1965.
