Joined the Florence Swim Team at the age of 13 in 1966. For four years he combined his talents with Bradshaw and Florence swim teams. He held numerous records in the breaststroke in the state, southeast and nation. In 1970 he was listed by the United States Amateur Athletic Union among those swimming the 10 best times nationally in two events, posting the best time in the 110-yard breaststroke and the second best time in the 220-yard breaststroke. In addition to these honors he was selected to the 1971 high school All-American team. Chris signed a scholarship with North Carolina State and continued his success with the Wolfpack. He broke ACC records in the 100 and 200 yards breaststroke. He was named All-American his sophomore and junior years at NC State.
