David Willingham

 

David Willingham played basketball and baseball at Mars Hill and later played baseball at Freed Hardeman College. He became the panthers head baseball coach in 1976 and took his team to back-to-back state championships in 1977 and 1978, while finishing second in1979. After leaving for a short time to enter private business, he returned to Mars Hill in 1987 as athletic director. teacher, golf coach, track coach. cross country coach and boy's basketball coach. He took three players to the state golf tournament in l988, '90, '91, and '92 and the cross country team was second in the state in 1995. As basketball coach from 1987-1996, his team's posted a 187-79 record. His first team went 10-8, won the area championship and advanced to the Elite Eight in the state. Mars Hill advanced to the Final Four twice, finishing second in 1996 with a 29-3 record. Three other teams advanced to the Sweet 16 in the state.
