Gary Weaver

Burrell-Slater School in Florence produced numerous quality athletes, but perhaps none were any more talented than Gary Weaver. He played linebacker and guard at Burrell-Slater before moving to Bradshaw where he played varsity football and basketball. He was All-City and All Quad Cities in 1966 in football. He earned a spot on the All-Region 8 Tournament Basketball Team.  However, he later focused his attention to football. He played offensive guard at Trinidad Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado, before transferring to Fresno State University. He was a junior college All-American guard and a team co-captain in 1970. He was first-team selection in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference in 1972 while at Fresno. He was named as an All-American linebacker the same year and played in the College AllStar Game and All-American Bowl in 1973. The Oakland Raiders selected him in the seventh round of the 1973 NFL draft. He played linebacker and was a specialty team player for the Raiders from 1973-76 before moving to the Packers where he played five seasons. He played in the 1973-74 AFC Championship game and was the Packers Most Valuable Defensive Player in 1977. He led the Packers in tackles for three consecutive seasons.  He has coached at five high schools, and is now an executive member of NFL Alumni Inc., on the board of directors for Youth Inspiration and Goals Foundation, and has also served on Parents Helping Parents.
